Marking by Semester

Important:

The method for calculating semester marks
has changed in 2013-14.

When setting up Categories and Units in the first semester, check off both S1 and S Final, as shown in the image at the right.

The final mark is cumulative - it adds up all summative marks (Of) - not diagnostic (For) or formative (As).

Categories for Assessments

Only Summative Assessments are factored into the marks.

You must call your assessments by a name that shows that it is Summative.

Diagnostic & Formative
Homework, quizzes, In Class Work
Summative *
Mini-Test (not a Quiz), Assignment (not In Class Work)

Adjust weighting of marks before the final report card

Before calculating the final grade you have the option of looking over the entire year’s markbook, and possibly changing the weight of various categories, or items within categories (to give more weight to later assessments).

"Determining a report card grade will involve teachers’ professional judgement and interpretation of
evidence and should reflect the student’s most consistent level of achievement, with
special consideration given to more recent evidence". (Growing Success, p.39)

How Marks are Calculated

  Previous Method
New as of 2013-14

Semester 1

Grade calculated in January. May have included mark for a mid-term exam up to 30% of grade. Marks were locked at end of semester.

Snapshot of progress to date based on whatever assessments are in Markbook at time of report, including any "big tests" (mid-term exams from Limudei Kodesh).

Semester 2

Grades from Feb 1st were added up for a second semester mark.

Grades are culmative and based on all summative (Of) marks to-date.
Exam or
Culminating Activity
Separate grade worth 30% of the final mark. Separate grade worth 30% of final mark.

Final Grade

(Semester 1 x 35%) + (Semester 2 x 35%) + Final Exam/Activity (30%)

All assessments since September (70% of grade) + Final Exam/Culminating Activity (30%)
