Authors

  • Author’s first names are spelled out.

  • Author’s first names are replaced by initials.

Multiple Entries for Single Author

  • Arrange entries by title.

  • Replace author’s name after first entry with 3 hyphens.

  • Arrange entries by publication date, from oldest to most recent title.

  • Repeat the author’s name each time.

Titles

  • Titles of books, periodicals and websites are italicized.

  • Titles of articles are enclosed in quotation marks.

  • Capitalize each word of a title except for “a”, “an” or “the” if they appear in the middle of the title.

  • Titles of books, periodicals and websites are italicized.

  • Do not italicize web addresses (URLs).

  • Replace “and” with “&” between names.

  • Only capitalize the first word, proper nouns and the first word after a colon are capitalized for books, articles and websites.

  • Capitalize periodical titles.

Dates

  • Dates are placed at the end of an entry.

  • There is no comma between the month and the day’s date.

  • Abbreviate months except for May, June and July.

  • Dates are placed in brackets immediately after the author’s name.

  • There is a comma between month and the day’s date.

  • Months are not abbreviated.

Format

  • Identify the format (print, web, etc.) of each entry.

  • Include URL (web addresses). Note that for MLA style the URL is not required, however at our school it is required.

  • Do not identify the format (print, web, etc.).

  • Include URL. There is no bracket around it.
