On-Line Tools for Citation

These wonderful websites will help you format your citations! You are encouraged to use them as they will help you format your citations in the proper APA or MLA formats. The main point of citing sources is to give credit to the author or creator of the material and these will help you fulfill that goal.

Software for Citation

  • Some programs, such as OneNote or Evernote, allow you to drag information from the Internet
as well as grabbing the web address automatically for you!

  • Word 2007 and 2010 have built-in citation generators They are found under the References< tab.

  • Google has a new Research tool within Google Drive(formerly Google Documents).

  1. You can use that tool to format citations in APA or MLA.

  2. To use this service, you need a (free) Google account.

  3. Log in and start a new Google document.

  4. At the top, select Tools > Research.

  5. A new panel opens up at the side of the document.

  6. Be sure to go to Settings before you begin to search. Pick APA or MLA.

  7. If you want free to use pictures and other materials, select that too.

  8. When ready, type something into the search bar.

  9. You will also see a list of websites. When you hover under each of the listings, three buttons will appear – preview, link and cite.

  10. With preview you can see a small image of the website. Click on the image to go to the page and copy what you want. When you’re done, go back to your document and paste it in. You can return to the Research panel and click on “cite” and you will get a full citation at the bottom of your document page.
