Creative Commons is non-profit organization which has created a way for those who create material to say to allow others to share and adapt their work using a system of licenses. This means that generally we don't have to ask permission to use the work, however the creator still usually expects credit and the copyright still belongs to him or her.

Even though you do not need to get permission to use Creative Commons material and other work labeled as free for use on the internet, you still need to cite your sources in your paper or project. Follow the standard MLA or APA citation guidelines for creating your citation.

For more information on Creative Commons, visit www.CreativeCommons.org.

There is also information on this wiki on the Creative Commons page on how to attribute CC works and how to create your own license.
